Dr Lam receives his doctoral degree (Summa Cum Laude, first-class honors) at the Maryland Rochville Theatre, and his Bachelor and Master degree at the University of Winnipeg Theatre School. As the first professional mime artist in Hong Kong, Dr Lam is a recognized member of the American Drama Guild Association and is chosen by the Editorial Board of Oxford Press as one of the four most influential people in Hong Kong Theatre. His name has been included in Who's Who in Contemporary World Theatre. Dr Lam joined the School of Drama at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts and taught for 23 years. He has been the Head of Acting of the School till his leave. He has also been an active actor of television, movie and theatre. His performance in “Death of a Salesman” and “Don’t Dress for Dinner” had earned him the Best Supporting Actor Award. Dr Lam has directed several famous plays of Shakespeare, Molière, Jean Genet, Chekhov etc, and a number of local and Broadway musicals. He was invited by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre in 2009 to direct the Shakespeare play “Richard III” and was the pioneer in staging Cantonese version of Shakespearean historical plays in Hong Kong. He received the Hong Kong Drama Awards of Best Director and Best Performance of the Year with his directing work “The End of Long River”. Dr Lam is now a part-time lecturer of Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Course Coordinator and the lecturer of the HKUSPACE Diploma in Theatre Studies. He is the Artistic Advisor to the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Artistic Advisor and Board Committee of Employees Retraining Board and The Skills Upgrading Scheme of Labour Bureau.
